Forty imagined scenes from forty imagined lives. Glimpse is a different kind of short story collection, highlighting scenes or short “glimpses” into the lives of the characters. Cry with a Goth rocker in London in one scene, then blink and travel to heaven with an angel in another. Laugh with a middle aged woman on a crowded bus, then flip to another scene and soar with a seagull in search of Cheetos. Some scenes are poignant; some hilarious, some sad, some ironic. Just like life.

Witty. Thought provoking. Soul-Baring. World-Wary. Naive. Hopeful. Cynical. Foolish. Wise. All one (or two) word descriptions of these snapshot stories given us by Lisa Mathisen. I found myself laughing, cringing, grinning, furrowing my brow, nodding my head, shaking my head and then scratching my head. Ms. Mathisen takes us on several, brief journeys that grabbed my attention and kept me turning the pages. Just what an author is supposed to do!Product details

Glimpse Lisa Mathisen 9781519795090 Books Reviews
Wild. Fun. Thoughtful. Unlike any other book. Glimpse it for yourself.
What a fun read! I enjoy short stories because I can read at my own pace and not worry about forgetting plot. Each story stands on its own but I found myself anticipating the next chapter. Would I chuckle..or cry....or pause and wonder? I'm definitely sharing this book.
I'm learning to pace myself through this book. I could read it in a day but instead I'm only letting myself read a couple of "glimpses" a day as I don't want it to end. As with a box of good chocolates, yes, one could devour it all in one day but then what would one have to look forward to the next day. I'm hoping she's already working on Glimpse 2.
It is very hard to describe the mood in one of the "buckets", as these are a series of short stories -- rapid, engaging stories. You'll find you can read each inside of ten minutes, though you will frequently go back to the beginning.. It's fast-moving and fun.
Ms. Mathisen makes a series of short stories into a page-turner. I highly recommend it.
Ms Mathisen has a gift. She can put herself into the mind of the protagonist regardless of the situation. I found myself re-reading several "Glimpses" and comparing the style. The thread that ties the collection together is the strong will of the women who are the subjects in this book. No weak ones. Well done, Ms. Mathisen.
40 great snip its of the lives of women just trying to make their mark on this world. Some uplifting, some gut wrenching. I highly recommend this. You can read at your leisure as each story if as the title implies, as glimpse in the life of an ordinary and extrodiary woman. I find myself hoping the author will treat to more glimpse in the future
I really enjoyed this book. Each 'glimpse' was well-written with rich imagery and economy of expression, and each one had a little twist that invoked either laughter or a tear. They are all about single events or dreams in a girl's/woman's life and they run the gamut from simple wardrobe malfunctions to abuse. When I got to story #40, I was disappointed that there wasn't more to read.
These are not short stories though, more like prose haiku.
The only criticism I have is her use of metaphor. Frequently, they just don't work well. Instead of enhancing my understanding of an event or feeling, they often drew my attention away from the story being told. I would think about the metaphor itself, rather than enjoying the comparison being drawn.
An example is in 'The Last Time' - "Her heart liked to water board her brain..." That just leaves me wondering about how the biology would work, instead of making me think about how emotion takes over our more rational self at times, which is supposed to be what a good metaphor would help me understand in this case.
The author is at her best when she sticks with her significant talent in using short expressive sentences that are descriptive, colorful, earthy and direct. 'Underland' and 'Glitter' are in that vein and are just great.
I look forward to her next book...
