This curiosity of a book was written in the early 1900s. A sparkly bit of fluff, the story takes place during the downfall of the British aristocracy in the time when large estates became a financial drain and could not support the old lifestyle. And yet, thanks to a mind-set developed over centuries, "gentlemen" distained working as an option.This comedy of manners shows what happens when a young housemaid inherits a fortune and hires her young, penniless former mistress as her maid. Madness ensues as the "maid" tries to polish her new mistress and help her navigate the potential disasters awaiting her in society and among fortune hunters.
Since this is a comedy of manners, stereotypes are used liberally. Some, like the handsome, sweet-talking, duplicitous Irishman fit into the story.
Others, like the villain--an oily, mean-spirited foreign Jew--make modern readers cringe.
It is best to keep in mind that this book comes from an earlier age with all the prejudices of that age.
It also helps to remember that the setting is around the time of World War I when a swastika was merely an ancient good luck symbol.

Entertaining read by Bertha Ruck, an author who wrote 90 plus novels between the years 1905-1972. Let me preface my review by stating that current standards of "social correctness" and/or fairness toward people of different races, financial situations, and even physical challenges were not considered by some authors who wrote books during this era. In fact, terms often applied to individuals of races other than the main characters might be offensive to some readers.
If one can look past the above and move into the story with the understanding it was a different day, taking into consideration that hopefully, we as a nation have come a ways since that period, then perhaps it's possible to relax and enjoy the good parts of the story.
In this book, we have Beatrice Lovelace, a young woman of "quality" who has the misfortune to live with her Aunt Anastasia smack dab in the middle of the London surburbs wherein dwell "common" folks who appear to be normal, including young folks of Beatrice's age who are all about being busy and having a good time. Not Beatrice, however, for her aunt believes they are above the folks who dwell in the neighborhood. Beatrice is isolated, has no friends and not even two shillings to rub together. She does have a kinda friend in the maid of all work, little Miss Million. The girls often talk, sharing dreams as they work together in the home. Between the two of them, Miss Million, although an orphan, seems to be the most fortunate for she is at least allowed to work and earn money. No such luck for Beatrice due to strict disciplines based on her aunt's opinion of their "class" and expected behavior in society - which basically means absolutely no society for Beatrice.
One day, Miss Million learns she has inherited a fortune from an unknown uncle who lives in America. She is terrified of how to go about claiming the money, spending the money and needs help from Beatrice. This is the opportunity Beatrice has been longing for - an escape from Aunt Anastasia and her horrible life. Very shortly, Beatrice is acting as Miss Million's maid and doing everything she can to dress her, correct her cockney accent to proper English, all in an attempt to help her find a proper husband.
Of course, all who see the two young women together in their respective roles, realize Beatrice is a class act and little Million is... well, she is what she is and there won't be turning any sow's ear into a purse. Nevertheless, the young women enter a society of sorts when Miss Million hooks up with some folks who are/were actors, etc. Beatrice has her hands full trying to keep up and along the way the girls encounter some handsome men, including The Honorable James Burke - a handsome blue-eyed rascal, Mr. Brace - the former neighbor of Beatrice and now Miss Million's banker, and then there's Miss Million's cousin from the US, who comes to claim some of Miss Million's money.
The girls have a lot of adventures before they settle down into a comfort of sorts while England is on the edge of war. Sweet romance is in the making for Beatrice. She has more than one gent interested in her. Will she choose safety and comfort or will she choose the blue-eyed rogue con artist? You might be surprised.
An impoverished high-society elderly aunt, her 23-year-old niece Beatrice and their maid Nellie live in a low class area. The aunt refuses to allow the niece any association with the neighbors. The poor girl is pretty much a recluse. Everything changes when the maid inherits a lot of money from an American uncle. Beatrice becomes the maid, and Nellie tries to find her way in Society. What you think might happen definitely does not. What you think will become a turning point in the story is only a side plot. Originally copyrighted in 1915, this wonderful twisty tale kept me on my toes, always wondering what is important. Beatrice does find what and who is important to her. You should read this!
